Team development vs. team building: what’s the difference?

The two terms are often used interchangeably. They solve different problems, and choosing the wrong one is a common reason training budgets disappoint.

Team building

Team building is a shared experience: an activity, an outing or an event that helps people connect. It is valuable for morale and relationships, especially for new or remote teams. Its effects usually fade within weeks, because nothing about how the team works has changed.

Team development

Team development builds capability the team keeps using: how people communicate, make decisions, handle conflict and hold each other accountable. It gives the team a shared language, practical tools and practice on the situations they actually face.

Signs your team needs development

  • The same misunderstandings keep recurring
  • Conflict is avoided until it escalates
  • Roles and decisions are unclear
  • The team is new, growing, merged or has a new leader
