When I Grow Up, I want to Be? Only about 5% of people truly discover what they want to be or do at an early ageโand stick to it. Most of us switch careers multiple times throughout our lives, with some studies suggesting the average person may change jobs 10 to 15 times in their working life!
I wasnโt one of the lucky ones. In fact, I chose wrong more than a few times. But hereโs the ๐ด๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐: I also made some right choices along the way.
For the rest of usโor for your childrenโrather than focusing on a specific job or career path, hereโs where to start:
What are your natural tendencies?
What abilities come easily to you?
What excites you and makes you lose track of time?
โชIf money werenโt a concern, what would I spend my days doing?
โชWhat did I love doing as a child that Iโve lost touch with?
โชWhat problems or challenges do I enjoy solving?
โชWhen do I feel most alive and connected to my work?
Ask 5 Friends: Get their feedback on what they believe you excel at.
Ask a Coworker or Boss: What strengths do they see in you? Their perspective can often highlight skills you might overlook.
Reflect on Patterns: Look back on past jobs, projects, or even hobbies. What skills or activities have consistently brought you joy or success?
Experiment: Try new things! Take on projects outside your comfort zone, attend workshops, or shadow someone in a different field. Sometimes, new experiences reveal passions we didnโt even know we had.
